Another holiday season means another round of decorated sugar cookies at our house. As you'll see from the photos, Emma's becoming a pro. She helped me roll and cut out the dough and I decorated them during nap-time. She decorated some eggs with sprinkles when she woke up... a lot of sprinkles.
Here is the link to my favorite sugar cookie recipe... it is the best, using powdered sugar to give the cookies a fine texture.
I love mixing colors... here are my tips for creating really pretty colors.
Decorating is really simple if you practice having a steady hand that can make basic shapes. It is really just drawing outlines and filling in.
I piped a wing on after the body had dried to create a second layer.
The birds and bunny needed a little extra, too, so I piped a wing in blue and a white breast on the bird. Mr. Bunny got a white sparkly sprinkle tail.
Here's the blue bird complete with wing and white breast.
I wanted the eggs to resemble real eggs - I love how they turned out. I think they'll go great when packaged with the brightly colored chicks, birds and bunnies.
Just a look at my kitchen mid-mess...
Speaking of mid-mess... Miss Emma loves her sprinkles!
Look at our sweet little collection of spring cookies.
I'll be packaging these up (and freezing) them for Easter baskets - I'll share them later this week (or early next...)!

Jenny, such pretty cookies! I enjoy decorating sugar cookies too but have not tried freezing them after decorating them. Would you share your tips for freezing them- how you package them for the freezer, and such. Thank you for writing a fun blog to read! I really enjoy it!! -Andrea
ReplyDeleteAndrea - I just wrote a post about Freezing Cookies - here it is! http://jennysteffens.blogspot.com/2013/03/freezing-sugar-cookies-per-your-request.html

These are very charming!! You did a great job decorating them... I'm inspired to make my own!
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to read that the cookies can be frozen. Do you freeze the whole cookie - icing and all? I love any blog posts with photos of Emma. She looks like a real character!
ReplyDeleteFunny to see these today, I was up late last night making cookies for my sister-in-law's baby shower this weekend and was wondering about freezing them with the icing on...you haven't found that the icing cracks? I was worried about that happening.
ReplyDeleteI love this post as I would like to master the art of cookie decorating.
ReplyDeleteWith the food coloring link at William Sonoma, decorating pens were advertised. Do you ever use them? Or have an opinion on them?
I want to have the proper supplies to increase my chances of success.
Thanks for the post!
Love these! The blue birds are my favorite. I can't imagine how long it must have taken you to do these.
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful! thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletethese are so cute and what a fun way to make happy memories too. I hope you'll share this at my hop tomorrow. xo P.S. you still have time to enter the giveaway too.
ReplyDeleteSo creative and so cute!
ReplyDeleteThe speckled egg cookies are such a great idea! Emma looks adorable in the shot with all the sprinkles - the eyelashes are amazing:) Can't wait to see the packaging soon. Jessica
ReplyDeleteThese look great!! Do you use any tips when you decorate? Do you flood the icing after you outline the cookie?
ReplyDeleteSuper cute. Would it be possible for you to share your sources with us? I am curious as to where the cookie cutters and Emma sprinkles are available. I, too am with the other ladies on cookie storage. How long can they be frozen without cracking? Could I use merengue powder instead of egg whites for the frosting? Thank you for all your help with this project.
ReplyDeleteLove these! You are so talented! ... I'd love to know where you found your cookie cutters? We always make a carrot cake with the kids for Easter, but I'm thinking we just may need to add some sugar cookies to the tradition! Thanks for the inspiration!
